With Timely Treatment, a Cavity Can Often Be Repaired with a Filling

Posted .

An inconsistent oral hygiene routine or the lack of regular attendance to your dental checkups at Feldman Dentistry greatly increases your chances of developing cavities. If it is detected early, your dentist, Dr. James Feldman, can repair most small cavities with a standard dental filling.

Dr. James Feldman will start by conducting a thorough examination of the tooth. This will likely include taking some X-rays to make sure the decay hasn’t reached the sensitive internal structures of the tooth. Then, they will use a drill to carefully remove all traces of tooth decay. The material they recommends for the new filling will be based on the tooth’s location and its prevalence in your smile.

Gold, amalgam, composite resin or porcelain are industry standard materials used in fillings. Amalgam and composite materials can be directly applied to the cavity in the first appointment. If a gold or porcelain filling is called for, they will take a detailed impression of the cleaned cavity. A temporary filling will be applied. Then, the impression will be sent to a dental lab where the final filling is custom crafted to match your smile. You will then need to come back in for a brief second appointment to cement it into place.

If you are concerned that a cavity has formed on one of your teeth, you shouldn’t delay in contacting us for timely treatment.
